Professor Birch’s Introduction
Gamma Emerald begins with Professor Birch welcoming you to the Pokemon world. Let the introduction play until he asks who you are.
Choose your character, enter a name and confirm it. Birch then sends you into the familiar moving-truck opening as your family arrives in Littleroot Town.

The Moving Truck and Arrival in Littleroot
You gain control inside the moving truck. Walk toward the bright opening at the back and step outside.
Mom is waiting beside the truck and welcomes you to Littleroot. Follow her into the house when the scene continues. The movers are still arranging the ground floor, so go upstairs to see your room and finish the required home introduction.
- Walk to the open rear door of the truck.
- Follow Mom into the new house.
- Go upstairs to the player’s room.

Your Room and the Gamma Emerald Starter Kit
Inspect the room before going back downstairs. The shelf beside the desk holds a Starter Kit that is easy to miss if you leave immediately. Collect it now; the Poke Balls let you catch wild Pokemon as soon as the game permits encounters, while the Potion and Revive are useful protection for the opening battles.
Complete the remaining conversation with Mom downstairs. She points out the Petalburg Gym report and explains that your father, Norman, is its Gym Leader. Your next useful stop is the neighboring house, where Professor Birch’s family lives.

| Item | Qty. | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Poke Ball | 5 | Starter Kit on the bedroom shelf |
| Potion | 1 | Starter Kit on the bedroom shelf |
| Revive | 1 | Starter Kit on the bedroom shelf |
Littleroot Town and the Neighboring House
Littleroot is small: your house, the neighbor’s house and Birch’s laboratory are all close together. Enter the neighboring house and speak to the family downstairs, then go up to the bedroom. Inspect the Poke Ball on the floor to bring in May or Brendan, depending on the character you selected.
Your new rival introduces themselves and remembers that Birch needs help with fieldwork. Leave the house after the conversation. The laboratory is worth recognizing, but Birch is not inside; walk to the north edge of town instead. A frightened child near Route 101 points you toward someone calling for help.
- Visit the upstairs room in the neighboring house.
- Leave Littleroot and take the north exit to Route 101.

Route 101 and Your Starter Pokemon
Follow Route 101 a short distance north to find Professor Birch being chased beside his dropped field bag. Approach the bag when Birch asks for help. Three Poke Balls are arranged beside it, giving you a choice of Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip.
Choose carefully because this becomes your permanent starter. Treecko is Grass type, Torchic is Fire type and Mudkip is Water type. The rival will later use the starter with a type advantage over yours, but all three can complete the available Early Access route.
The choice immediately starts the rescue battle. Use the starter’s damaging move rather than spending turns on a status move. Once the wild Pokemon is defeated, speak to Birch and follow the scene back to his laboratory.

Birch’s Lab and the Road to Oldale
Birch lets you keep the starter as thanks for helping him and asks you to find his child on Route 103. Leave the lab, take the northern exit from Littleroot and cross Route 101 again. Wild encounters and route trainers can provide a little experience before the rival battle.
Oldale Town is the first settlement with a Pokemon Center and Poke Mart. Heal at the Center even if the starter only took light damage. The west road is not the objective yet; use the path north of town to enter Route 103.

Route 103 and the First Rival Battle
Follow the accessible western side of Route 103 north through the grass. The route ends near the water on this first visit, where May or Brendan is finishing fieldwork. Speak to your rival to begin the battle.
Their starter depends on your choice and has the natural type advantage. A small amount of Route 101 training makes the fight safer. Keep the Starter Kit Potion ready instead of risking a knockout when your starter reaches low health.
After the battle, your rival returns south. Follow the same path through Oldale and Route 101 to Birch’s Lab in Littleroot; the west exit from Oldale opens after the laboratory sequence is complete.

Return to Birch’s Lab
Professor Birch congratulates you after the rival battle and gives you the Pokedex. Your rival also provides additional Poke Balls. This closes the tutorial loop and turns the west road from Oldale into the next story route.
Leave the lab and pass through Route 101 one more time. You can heal in Oldale before turning west. From this point, build more than a one-Pokemon team if possible; several trainer battles lead to the first Gym in the next part.

| Item | Qty. | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Pokedex | 1 | From Professor Birch after the Route 103 rival battle |
| Poke Balls | 1 | From your rival in Birch’s Lab |
Route 102 to Petalburg City
Take Oldale’s western exit onto Route 102. This is the first longer route with several trainers positioned along the main path. Work through them from east to west and use the grass to catch another Pokemon if your starter is still alone.
The path bends north near the far side of the route. Follow it past the final trainer and berry area to reach Petalburg. The city entrance places you beside the Pokemon Center, making it easy to heal before the next story scene.

Arriving in Petalburg City
Route 102 opens beside Petalburg’s Pokemon Center and Poke Mart. Heal your team at the Center before looking for the Gym.
The orange-roofed Gym sits northwest of the entrance. Walk there after healing; the visit moves the story forward even though you cannot earn a badge here yet.
Petalburg Gym and Meeting Wally
Enter the Gym and speak to Norman. He is your father and Petalburg’s Gym Leader, but he will not battle a new Trainer yet. Wally arrives during the conversation and asks for help catching his first Pokemon before leaving for Verdanturf.
Norman lends Wally a Pokemon and sends you along. Follow the event back toward Route 102 when Wally leaves the Gym.

Wally Catches His Pokemon and Scott Appears
Watch Wally enter the grass and complete his first catch. The scene returns to Petalburg Gym, where he gives Norman’s Pokemon back. Norman then points you toward Roxanne in Rustboro for your first badge.
Leave the Gym and head for Petalburg’s western exit. Scott stops you on the way and introduces himself as someone searching for talented Trainers. Finish the conversation, then continue onto Route 104 to begin Part 2.
