Petalburg Woods and Rustboro Gym: Pokemon Gamma Emerald Walkthrough Part 2

Route 104 South and Mr. Briney’s Cottage

Leave Petalburg through the west gate and follow the lower half of Route 104. The path reaches a beach and the small cottage where Mr. Briney lives. You cannot use his boat yet, but remember this landmark; the story brings you back after Rusturf Tunnel.

Return to the grassy path north of the cottage and work through the route trainers. This is a useful place to level a second Pokemon before Rustboro Gym. The dark opening between the trees at the route’s north end leads into Petalburg Woods.

Petalburg Woods

Petalburg Woods uses a winding path with side openings hidden by the dense tree line. Follow the main trail north and east. Several optional trainers can be battled along the way, and they are useful training before Rustboro Gym if your team needs a few levels.

A Team Aqua Grunt appears while the researcher is discussing the Devon Goods. Walk into the scene to protect the researcher. This is the first direct Team Aqua event and cannot be skipped if you want to reach Rustboro.

Route 104 North and Rustboro City

Leave Petalburg Woods through the north opening. Route 104 continues past the flower shop, bridge and trainers before joining the stone road into Rustboro. Keep following the paved route rather than turning back toward the woods.

Rustboro is much larger than the earlier towns. Heal at the Pokemon Center near the southern entrance, then use the large central fountain as a landmark while exploring. Devon Corporation dominates the north side, but its story events come after the Gym.

Roxanne’s Gym is in the northwestern district. A Water- or Grass-type attack makes the first badge battle much easier. If your starter does not cover Rock types, train a suitable teammate on Route 104 or in the woods before entering.

Rustboro Gym and Roxanne

Enter the stone-fronted Gym after healing. Inside, narrow walkways run between rock displays and raised walls. Some trainers can be avoided by taking the open side paths, but fighting them provides useful experience and confirms whether your Rock-type counter is ready.

Roxanne waits on the raised platform at the back. Heal your main attacker before speaking to her. Water- and Grass-type moves are the safest plan for the battle, especially if the Gym trainers have already worn down your team.

The Devon Theft and Route 116

A Team Aqua thief runs through northern Rustboro with the Devon Goods, followed by the researcher you helped in Petalburg Woods. Speak to the researcher, then continue through the city’s northeastern exit onto Route 116. The chase gives this route a clear purpose: recover the package before the thief escapes through Rusturf Tunnel.

Follow Route 116 east through the grass and trainer paths. The tunnel opening is cut into the rocky wall at the far end. Mr. Briney is waiting nearby and explains that the same thief also took his Wingull, Peeko. Speak to him before entering the cave.

Rusturf Tunnel and the Devon Goods

Only a short portion of Rusturf Tunnel is accessible during this visit. Follow the open corridor through the mist until the Aqua Grunt and Peeko are visible. Speaking to the Grunt starts the required battle.

Winning returns the Devon Goods to your Key Items. Mr. Briney enters and reunites with Peeko, which also explains why he will help with the sea crossing in the next part. Leave through the same tunnel entrance and retrace Route 116 to Rustboro.

Give the package back to the Devon researcher. Do not leave the city afterward; the researcher takes you inside Devon Corporation, where Part 3 begins with a new delivery from Mr. Stone.
